The Venus of Willendorf is one of the oldest extant images of human-king at 25,000 years old. It may indicate the point at which we became Homo sapien, the self-reflective species, "the man who knows that he knows". The carved limestone original was found during archaeological excavations at Willendorf, near Krems, Austria in the early part of this century. It is associated with the Gravettian culture of the Wurm glacial period. The original is in the Natural History Museum of Vienna. The figurine is very likely part of the culture which gave rise to the 'Goddess' cultures of Old Europe, which in turn, became part of Greek culture, where gods and goddesses ruled side by side. The Venus of Willendorf is associated with abundance, fertility, and it called upon as the 'Great Mother', the archetypal origin figure of our bodies and psyches. We honor Her in our Ordinary Goddess Bath Collection, as we invite the Goddess into our everyday lives to help us do The Great Work. Directions
